Many of our old listserv members are having trouble adjusting to the new message board forum and feel overwhelmed so they aren't visiting the site or keeping updated - which means they aren't giving or receiving as much support as they could be.

So we have an idea to help them participate more and also to make it easier on our members here to keep up...

Every day we will post a list of those topics which were started / responded to with links to those topics. So that way if anyone wants to see what's going on here, they can look over the list and click on the topics they are interested in to pop in over here. Only topics will be listed, not full posts.

This won't be easy. The programmer is looking into how to automate it, but in the meantime, we need a few volunteers who can do this once a day. Hopefully you can copy and paste directly from the new posts list.

Any volunteers?

Also, we will be cross-referencing e-mail addresses from this site's membership/profiles to those on our listservs. Please make sure to use the same e-mail address in both places or you will be booted off of our lists.

To join the lists (you only have to join 1), you can go to our yahoo groups:

Main List - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cherubs
Grieving Parents List - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cherubs2

Ok, Im a bit confused. So you need someone to post the links for the daily topics in the old Yahoo listservs? I didn't think those were active anymore.

Hi Dawn,

When I first logged in I was also overwhelmed but once you get used to things it is a lot easier. I think this is a good interim measure but ...???

I have found that when I log in I go directly to New Posts and I can see all the message topics that have been posted since I was last in. That would basically be the same thing as a getting an email message, reading the topics then logging in and reading them. Wouldn't it? While we use the intermin measure should we also be sending hints to the list on how to use the new site as simply a way to read posts? A lot of people don't have the time to look at all the extras - the blogs etc. But to use this board in a similar fashion to the listservs you simply log in and click on New Posts. It is easy to reply to messages but a little more thought has to go into creating a new one (wondering where to put it!) but you soon work that out.

Just my suggestion to keep the work load down.

If we do go with the posts to the listserv maybe we could spread the load and if we get enough volunteers have one day each week when it is your job to post to the listserv? I would be willing to do one day a week (I would set a reminder on my computer) but couldn't do the lot. If you get other volunteers I happy to let them do it :D

Will just CHERUBS members be able to read the topics?
I would be concerned about our privacy. Would that be an issue?

I would love to help, but have NO CLUE how to do it.
Hopefully, others that have more computer smarts will help.

I just sent the first list of posts to the listservs. It includes only the name of the topic and a link to it. You have to be a member to be on our lists and you have to be a member to read the posts once you click on a link.

This is what I sent....

So we just need to be a member of yahoo to be able to get these off the yahoo listserv?

Ok, here may be a silly question. Can we just stay on the website if we have figured it out? We don't have to use the yahoo listserv right?

I think the list you send over is great.

A few members have been complaining that it's too inconvenient to come to the site to see what's new - they are used to being on lists and having everything come directly to them through mail. So they just don't come here or log on.

Plus, we have too many who have trouble getting on the site and aren't telling us so that we can help. They just give up.

We have over 2100 members with only about 100 that log in a month. This is our way of trying to get more of them here, using the site.

There is a lot here on our new site, I can fully admit that. But I'd rather we had too much information, than not enough. Who wants a small, brochure site when we can have something that parents can use and contribute to and talk to other parents 24/7? But that comes at a cost - it's bigger and a bit more confusing. But if you log in, you land on the page that gives you the news, list of last 10 or 15 posts, etc. It's not that hard, just needs a few visits to be comfortable with.

So this is our attempt to get those parents off the list and onto the site.

Yes, it would be a lot easier and less trouble if they just came here to check in - but I suppose people are busy and don't have time to do that much. So we're trying to make things more convenient for them.

I just don't know what else to do. We're totally open to all suggestions!

You have to be a member of *our* yahoo group to be able to get the list off of the listserv.

Yes, you can just stay on the site here. You absolutely don't have to be on list, this is just an aid for those on the list who don't check in to the site very often. If you want a daily list, you can sign up for the listserv, if you don't, then you don't need to. :)

I will volunteer to help with this. I could do it most days. I see the way this would make it easier for them to read the posts, but in order for them to reply wouldn't they still have to log in and find them again?

Dawn Torrence Ireland
01-07-2008, 05:46 PM
Thank you Corin and Danielle! Any other volunteers?

Yes, they'll still have to log in to read the posts but they shouldn't have to search for them. And they can always click on New Posts like the rest of us do. :)

I'll help corin. I think this is a wonderful idea.!!!
I love it actually.
A cherubs yahoogroup! Whoo hoo!!!
You would absolutely have to post that yahoogroup somewhere on the cherubs mainpage so new members( you know real members( opps sorry, that slipped out) can log on to a yahoogroup

You just copy and paste the titles of the posts that were written to on that day, along with the address for them. Then you take this list and post to CHERUBS Listservs.

For example, this post would be:

CHERUBS Listservs - http://cdhsupport.org/members/viewtopic.php?t=1196&start=15

That's all. :)

Dawn, is there an easier way to do this other than going into each forum to find the topics that had been posted to? I am trying to figure out the easiest way... the newest posts on the Portal only lists the last 10 or so... and since I usually end up on a few times a day I couldn't just go by the new post link... Hmmmm-any suggestions.

What I was doing was just going to the New Posts once a day - http://www.cdhsupport.org/members/search.php?search_id=newposts

And then copying and pasting the tiles and addresses into an e-mail.

You list volunteers need to be on the lists to do this, so if you aren't, let me know!
