Photos are chosen at random, with a teensy bit of preferential treatment given to the cherubs of active volunteers. Cherubs will posted only once until all cherubs have been featured and then we will start back over. Please don't ask me to post your cherub's photo at a certain time, because then I'll get swamped with requests and will feel horrible for not being able to post them all. But I will do my best to change them monthly! :)

Dawn- yuo have been so busy today!!!!THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO.

Kara- Thanks- our girls have been such an inspiration for all we have been through with Shelby. There amazing.

I have just enjoyed logging on and seeing faces of CHERUBS. It gives me such a great feeling that we have all come together for CDH. Such a struggle we have all had, what ever our situation has been. We are all here for support and I have said this before......I could not imagine my life without CHERUBS and the wonderful people I have met. This road has been rough for all of us. It has it's turns and bumps---if you have a support group to help you through your path- it makes traveling a lot easier.

CHERUBS ROCKS and ALL the LADIES that are here ROCK!!!!!!!! I look forward to the next picture change-to view the faces of CDH.

Stephanie, no way did I cook dinner. I went as far as thawing the ground beef and peeling and onion. It took me an hour to get just that done cause I have this little 16 month old (no name mentioned) who will not stay outta trouble. I spent all my time diverting him that I didn't get dinner going. I threw in the towel and Chuck made dinner while I got my exercise chasing that crazy 16 month old.

That worked out well for you Kara.
How was Christmas shopping today?

Adam is walking right? Shelby just started to really walk more and she is in to everything!!!!!I know the feeling of chasing around a 17 month old!!!
We took her to be weighted today and she lost!!!Darn it!!!! 6 ounces.
We'll just keep trying.

Christa- LOVE the saying!!!!!

Dawn- your the BOMB girl!!!!!!! You have touched so many people this Holiday season!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!

How much does Shelby weigh, Stephanie? I hate it when Adam loses. We have a weight check next week and we shall see. Two weeks ago he was 22 lbs 10 ounces.

StephanieOlivarez
12-11-2007, 06:30 PM
Oh Goodness...Shelby was 17 months yesturday and only weighs 18 pounds and 13 ounces. She was at 19 pounds 3 ounces a few days ago!!!!
I would LOVE to have Shelby weigh over 20 pounds.
I know it will come...it is just so frustrating!!!!!

Lise, thank you so much for saying that. It means so very much to me. I'm so very thankful for Adam's health today, but in the past it has really saddened me to know that I don't get to show off my babe because we hibernate so much with him. It really sucked when he was born because people didn't know how to act. We had a new baby that was so sick and it threw them. We only received 3 baby congrats cards for his birth but tons of we're sorry or thinking of you cards. Then we brought our new baby home and couldn't share him with the world. I missed out on taking him in stores and hearing people ooo & aaaah over the little baby. Heck, the blasted hospital didn't even give me his footprints. I can't tell the world how long my baby was at birth or an exact birth weight. Finally at one year old, we had a huge birthday bash for him with all our friends there to meet him for the first time. Now we are back in isolation again and I don't get to show off my pride and joy.

Words can't express how meaningful it was for you to out of the blue tell me how beautiful he is.

StephanieOlivarez
12-13-2007, 03:51 PM
Kara- you sure know how to make me cry.
You should be proud of Adam and it shows how much of a great mom you are.
Isoaltion is hard. Sometimes we get out in the car and just drive around.
Today when we go the the hotel...Shane goes in and wipes everything down. Strange to some....safe to us.
I keep reading what you write and it hits home to me so much. It is hard not to be able to show off you baby. Infact...it just hurts.
This will be over soon!!!!
I will be on here all winter long........we can talk everyday and get through this together.
We know ladies will pipe in and we can get through this TOGETHER.

Sorry to have jumped in on this one......but you have to know we are all here for you.

Smile sister....LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!

Stephanie: Can you tell me a little bit more about Shelby and her development? My David is 12 months old and weighs about 17 lbs. He is so small. He did not have his hernia (and fusion) correction until he was 4 1/2 months old and was in the hospital until 6 months old. He is not yet crawling, but just about. I am hoping that is my Christmas miracle this year. When did Shelby start crawling and did I understand you correctly she started walking at 17 months and weighs about 19 lbs? I am trying to get a sense of how these kids develop -- I know they are all different, but it is nice to hear how they are developing slowly but surely.

Kara my dear -- you are so generous with your time and your openness. I LOVE the pictures of Adam -- he is a miraculous little guy and you are a stupendous mother, woman, wife, etc. Your life will be filled with joys which will make up for the first difficult year of life.

Love to all. --Nicole

Yes--the key to remember is all CDH babies will develop different. But you are SO right---it is nice to hear of other CHERUBS successes.
Shelby is 17 months old and weighs 18pds 13 ounces. She started walking at 16 months and just this last couple of weeks...is walking more than crawling. Shelby started crawling around 10 months-that's when our DT said his work with Miss Shelby was done. Right now for 17 months old- she is developmental there---we are just lacking the eating issue. She eats nothing by mouth and seems to get sick a lot here lately....so the weight issue stays steady with her.
We had a DT come to the house once a week when Shelby was 6 months old to about 10 months. He was great. Do you have a DT for David?
I feel strongly about Shelby having big sisters and watching them walk...well she wanted to be with them---so now she is off!!!!

Nicole- David has come this far. He will crawl and I hope you are granted your Christmas miracle this year. Give it time and David crawling and YES walking will all come in time. I promise :)
You have to promise--when David does crawl---you let us know!!!!
If yu have any more questions-do not hesitate to ask.

I have heard so often that we all grieve in different ways. Even tho our baby isnt' here our grief is pretty evident. But those who have a living child w/ challanges grieve as well.
I love Cherubs because of the compassion we all feel.
I can fully understand your apprehension to 'show him off'.
Sheri came to my house w/ Jax and she told me how she basically hole dhim up as well. Any little cough sent her into a frenzy.
I totally get it.
( and he really is just precious!):-)

Lise,I think that is so cool that you and Sheri live so close together.
Jax is so darling!!!!
Where has Sheri been? Miss her posts.
Everyone that has been affected by CDH suffers in theri own way.
If I could take the pain all away.....oh by the good Lord... I would take it all away.

Oh Kara, I can really feel with you! Hang in there, one day........... Your baby boy is really really adorable and you can share as many pictures as you like so we can ohh and ahh over him :)

Stephanie, I love the way you put so much personality into your posts. I can almost hear your voice when I read them, even though we have never actually talked!

I just wanted to say how good it feels to see Rebecca's picture up there every time I open the site. There are times when all that happens seems like a bad dream and not real. But then I see her picture and it reminds me, she is real, she exists. I can't really explain how much good that does for me.

Yep, sheri came here to Tulsa from Texas w/ her 3 chidlren. My 16 yr old and her 17 yr old made such a cute couple!!!
And Jax was so sweet to Emmie.

Thanks Stephanie about the words of encouragement for David. I think I mentioned before I am a really really nervous mom. I think I am still kind of shell-shocked about everything that has happened to us this year. I am worried for David's future so I LOVE hearing the success stories about the other Cherub babies on this site. I take so much strength from hearing the success stories of these little guys. ESPECIALLY to hear from you and Kara that your children are developmentally on track. I know there is nothing holding David back and that his surgery was much later than most of the kids on this site (he was in the hospital months 4, 5 and 6) , but I am scared we will always be running to doctors, therapists, etc. Yes, we have a number of therapists -- OT, water therapy, cranial sacral, feeding therapist and developmental specialist. A LOT, I know. David also has an older sister (almost 5) who is constantly running around -- so I hope he gets the hint quick quick. :)

He is a total love, but I am scared everyday I can't take care of him or get him where he needs to go in life. Everyday I get up and pray I have the strength to be a good mom to him. It is very hard, but then I think of how far he has come. My mom is amazing and picks me up off the emotional floor constantly. This site has also been very helpful to me -- I love hearing about the successes of the babies who have survived (I also feel so much for the parents whose kids have not -- an absolute tragedy -- and the strength they have to continue on). I am thrilled Shelby is doing so well -- the feeding will come -- my feeding therapist says it is the hardest thing to get kids off the g-tube and feeding orally, but it does happen. I send you my best wishes for continued improvement in the eating. Please make sure to updated on how Shelby is doing and THANK YOU for sharing your successes regarding Shelby -- It really means a lot to know how well some of the other kids are doing.

Shelby's test went GREAT today. She was at a Stage 3 reflux now she is at a Stage 1. So she has improved.
The urology doc recommened we put Shelby on some Pedisure with fiber. We will try that and hope we can keep the UTI's away.
I am so relieved and feel so much better the test is over. Bless Shelby's heart....she cryed the whole time. We will go back in a year to do it again...but she will be older.

Nicole you please do the same and keep posting about David.
It is natural to be scared. I am scared to!!!Everyday of my life with Shelby- because the hardest thing is not knowing what could happen next.
You being scared and concerned about your son--SHOWS you are a great Mom.
It is hard to stay strong when so much has happened to our babies.
God will not give us something we cannot handle (this has become one of my favorite sayings).
If I can do anything for you or answer any questions- you just ask.
There are so many successes here at CHERUBS---and you are so right....it does mean a lot to hear the stories--gives great hope.

Shelby keeps up with her three sisters and David will do the same with his sister!!! I bet he will crawl before Christmas.

Hurray for Shelby. That's great news Stephanie! I bet you feel better getting that all over with. Ah, poor Shelby cried the whole time! Maybe God misheard me when I said "please help Shelby not to cry the whole time." Yeah, that's it. He must have thought I wanted her to cry the whole time.

StephanieOlivarez
12-14-2007, 07:49 PM
It is SUCH a relief.
That's funny about Shelby crying. I of course cryed the whole time to...it really hurts not to be able to take away the pain.
I don't know how Adam acts around docs---Shelby cries even when a doc walks in the room. When they come to touch her, now that is a nightmare!! I wish she understood that they are only there to help. I think when she is older she will be more calm. But then again maybe not.

Rebecca is near the middle between the elf and the snowman. She is the one with tubes in both nose holes - poor baby. It may sound horrible, but I am thankful that she doesn't have to suffer anymore. She fought so hard those 4 weeks of her life!

Oh, Stephanie. I am sorry that Shelby is so scared of doctors. My oldest has the same problem. She had a bad experience as a toddler and she screamed for years. She still tenses up even now that she is 12. I hope that doesn't scare you. Maybe you could make an appointment with your doctor just to give Shelby a positive experience, let the doctor play with her or maybe even meet outside of the office. Many doctors would be willing to do that if it would make their job easier in the long run.

Hugs from Germany,
Crista

Adam freaks out when he sees a doctor, except for his surgeon. He gets all giggly when he sees him. The rest of them, all they have to do is walk in the room and he screams. He's pretty ok with nurses, though. Which is weird cause I think they're the bad guys cause they're the ones that start IV's, give shots, take temperatures, etc.

You know what really makes Adam stormin mad. . . . . . . touching his face. Ever since he had those tubes down his throat and up his nose he will not let anyone touch is face without a fight. Even if its to wipe cereal off his chin.

As far as me, I make Chuck go into the testing rooms so I don't have to deal with watching Adam's pain. It's tough sitting on the outside, but not as tough as being on the inside.

CristaHavar

Stephanie, wonderful news about Shelby.

Ladies, Liam isn't too bad about going to see his doctors BUT his big sister Chelsea-Rose - 8 1/2 is so frightened by the whole medical profession that we call them prior to the appointment with a scream warning.
She freaks out whenever anyone is sick... something Liam can do quite often.
I'm wondering how other Cherubs siblings have gone on??

Liam also dislikes his face being touched and goes mental if you touch his feet, clipping his toes is 2 man job!

My four year old has become very intrigued with CDH and things that Adam has been through. He's my dramatic play child and so he LOVES playing doctor and surgeon. He turns his bedroom into an operating room and his dolls are the patients. They all get either a DH repair or have a G-tube placed. So ridiculously cute. Over the summer I found a nursing anatomy book at a garage sale for a quarter and bought it. Dr. Aaron always pulls that book out to diagnose his dolls. I also use it a ton to show Aaron what a normal persons inside looks like and then I describe how Adam's insides look.

As far as going to the doctor, Aaron does just fine and loves it. He also likes going with Adam to the doctor so he can try and calm him down. There is quite the bond building between the boys. It's great to see.

StephanieOlivarez
12-17-2007, 05:43 PM
My other three girls LOVE going to our doctor. No problems there.
What a great brother Aaron is. Isn't it sweet to see how siblings protect each other??

I hope to see Ross at the conference. That would be a great story to hear. I am going to look at his story now. But to meet him....priceless.

Dawn-do you know who will be speaking at the conference? any luck on hotels? How about babysitting? you know me...gotta plan in advance.
If I start to repeat myself....feel free to tell me to shut it :)

Bless your heart Sharon. Trying to cut Liam's toe nails is a struggle. Hope as time goes by that gets easier.

Real sweet . . . . . real sweet he is . . . . . ka thud . . . . take that foot kick to the abdomen little brother! It's been one of those days. What is it with boys and this natural instinct to beat each other up. Poor Adam doesn't have a fighting chance cause he is too weak in the torso.

Ethan English
Angelina Decker and her little sister
Braden Holt
Colton Crum

If you want us to feature your cherub make sure that you submit his / her photo to our main albums (Survivor and Non-Survivor). This is also where we will be pulling photos for the calendar and yearbook!

You might have also noticed that our web site colors have changed. Our marketing guru suggested that we go back to baby colors since CDH is a birth defect and the ribbon is pastel. So we're giving it a try! What do you all think?

Love seeing the cherubs each time they change. I remember how great it felt when I say Alyssa in there (first time the banner was up) and know what a kick we all get to see our cherubs 'up in lights' :-)

I like the new colours but also miss the old bright colours. Not sure which I like better but a change is always good!
