Baby Gavin

Rate this Entry
Well on April 18th baby Gavin is going to undergo surgery in mommys tummy. The procedure is very new, and cutting edge, but it's been successful thus far, and should help his little lungs grow. After the surgery i'll be on bed rest so that he can grow to be healthy, and strong until he's ready to meet the world. Now we're just praying that the insurance goes through, the procedure works, and that Gavin will be apart of this world with us! Chris, and I are trying to get extremely involved in the CDH community , so we have support, and help through all of this.Would love to hear about other stories to maybe help us through this rough time!!! SO happy I found you guys!!

Hope Gavin does well with the surgery and you too! Are you talking about the balloon procedure or the gel procedure? The balloon procedure has been around for years, but more hospitals are starting trials for this surgery, where before many had to travel to one or two hospitals in the US to have the surgery done.

We are happy you found CHERUBS! Look forward to getting to know more about you and Gavin!

As of right now they're going to use a stent... they will go through a little hollow pipe in my stomach and go down baby Gavins mouth to his trachea, and place this dissolvable stent in his trachea. They are only going to leave it in place for 4 weeks so that the walls of the lungs do not get destroyed, and hopefully in the 4 weeks they'll be able to grow without collapsing when he's born. This is extremely new , and only has been done to about 7 animals, and a handful of babies; however, all the cases had a 100% survival success rate! We are just praying for the best, and pray that all works out well, and that his little lungs grow, because as of right now one is completely collapsed do to being crushed.

Another question: do any of you other moms have a CDH baby with his heart pushed all the way to the right of his chest? would love to hear success stories about that one as well... trying to be as positive, and optimistic as ever, but this monday was when we found out how severe his CDH is, our specialist was giving us totally different measurements. Just trying to put ALL my faith in God, and push on through this rough time.

thanks for all of the ears, stories, and prayers!!!
    LOVE,
    BABY GAVIN, AND MOMMY

It does have to be new, for I haven't heard about the stent being used. I know St. Louis Children's were using the disolvable gel procedure. Hope all works out for you and baby Gavin!!

If your son is a left sided CDH, it is completely normal for his heart to be pushed all the way to the right due to all the organs in his chest cavity. The heart will shift back closer to where is should be after the CDH repair surgery and everything is put back in its right location.

    Tell Gavin to keep fighting!!

    Hi Casey,

I wasn't given the option to operate while Jagger was in the womb but I can tell you that Jagger's heart was pushed over to the middle of his chest and turned around backwards. Today Jagger is a happy healthy 1 year old with no complications. I know it is hard to stay positive during all of this mess but it is best for your baby. Good Luck!!!
