Alejandro Alva

Accepting CDH

Rate this Entry
I would like to start off by saying hello. I am Alejandro Alva and I am a proud survivor of CDH for 18 years. For years, I was angry and wondering why out of all people in the world why I had to suffer through this. Since my birth, I had to undergo six surgeries (three repairs and closures) and rely on oxygen tanks and feeding tubes. It was a mystery to both me and my mother, how could this happen? My mother never smoked and never drank, it also didn't appear to be genetic. In the past two years, I came to accept my condition and embrace it. I was meant to survive for this long and I want to help this cause as best as I can. If there are any parents whose children have CDH, please notify me. I would love to talk to people and hear your stories. I want to learn more about my condition. Please and thank you. You may contact me at: alex_alva13@yahoo.com

Welcome Alejandro!!! It is so good to see some more older survivors! I am a 21 year old survivor myself from CA. I have had many of the same "why me?" questions growing up. I am always here if you ever need anyone to talk to. : ) Again, welcome to CHERUBS! Feel free to explore the forums, they may just answer some questions you have been having.

Welcome Alejandro to CHERUBS. I am friends with your mom on facebook! Never blame yourself or your parents for this birth defect....I hope someday we all have answers to why this happens and better treatments for CDH. It is still not fair that only 50% of babies born with CDH survive. Have you and your mom participated in any of the CDH research studies. If you haven't and want information, let me know. I am a mom to a son who will be 9 next month! Again, welcome to CHERUBS. I really think having our older CDH survivors posting and helping others, gives so much hope.

Welcome! My son is a 10 year old survivor and so far have not had to go through any more repairs but that is at the top of my list of fears! He's growing fast all of a sudden. I think we all ask at some point in our live "Why me?" It's natural. Our struggles make us who we are, they shape us. They make us depend on others and more importantly make us depend on the Savior.

I'm happy you decided to join us. Hearing from adult survivors gives us all more hope in raising our CDH survivors. It's a hard road for all of us.
