Two weeks ago Axel woke up sick. Just like that. I had always been told in the NICU that when he got sick, he would get sick 100 times worse than as other kid. My son had had a cold for a few days, but Axel had shown no signs of anything. Then just like that Thursday morning sick. Cough congestion, and fever. I tried my best to comfort him knowing they doctors don't give cough syrup to babies or small children anymore. Or anything for congestion. But when Friday morning came and I had slept not a full hour the night before i knew something was wrong. I checked his SATS and it was 75. I tape the cannula and oxygen to his face as fast as I could and straight to TCH we went. We were passed immediately to the back and a team of doctors nurses, residents, fellows, and attendings came in. After a lot of hoopla, we were left alone. He slept resting as much as he could. Finally a Doctor came in and said " you're not leaving Texas Children." What he had no one knew. Blood work was drawn. He had to be poked in each hand forearm and foot, before they could draw enough amount for labs. My poor child was green at each prick site. We were Transferred up stairs placed in isolation. The next day I was informed he had RSV. I was floored. I cried while I informed my husband and family. I know they really didn't understand what it is. I tried to explain. I even mentioned Death could be an outcome. So we stayed in Progressive care and then were moved to pulmonary medicine. We had great nurses well most of the time. Good thing I never left his side. HE had a fever of 103.9 that a nurse had failed to read correctly. BUT MOMMY KNOWS BEST. As the days passed he was weaned from his oxygen. On the 6th day the doctor said I could wean as i saw fit, since I was in the room with him watching his sats. I agreed. A while later when I turned to look at the clock, I glanced at the monitor and went to wean his oxygen, Ihad been 4 hours and not a beep or false read. I look at Axel playing in his crib and he had taken off his nasal cannula. I was amazed and so excited I knew right then and there we would be going home the next day. We did leave after 7 days there no oxygen and just 2 meds. An antibiotic for 3 more days and an inhaler for use as needed. Now we have been home a week, If you were to look at him you would never have know he was is sick or in the hospital. His surgeon just said yesterday "he looks great" So happy to have my little man home and be with my older son too. I missed him so much while i stayed with Axel in the hospital. Jando mommy loves you very much.
